“The trials at Rainhill seemed to have set the people railway mad”. That is how it seemed to engineer Robert Stephenson in 1929. The Rocket steam engine, designed by Robert and his father, George, triumphed in front of huge crowds. In 2029 it will be 200 years since Rainhill hosted an event which revolutionised both transport and civilisation.

As we approach this anniversary we thought it would be good to have a permanent memorial to the trials and to this important part of our village and national history. We are planning to have installed a stained glass window to be positioned in the middle window on the north side of St Ann Church looking towards Warrington Road. Nottingham artist, Jennifer Bell, has designed a window that highlights the Rocket engine as well as engineer, George Stephenson, who is known as the 'Father of the Railways.'
This cannot happen without fundraising and we would be very grateful if you are able to donate any amount towards this project. The window will cost £40,000.
Donations can be made via this QR code or webpage. Please gift aid your donation if you are a U.K. taxpayer.

The design of the window will be published when it is finalised and approved.
